Croatia, formally the Republic of Croatia (Republika Hrvatska), is a Central European nation at the crossroads of the Pannonian Plain, the Balkans, and Adriatic sea. Its capital (and largest city) is Zagreb. Republic of Croatia borders Republic of Slovenia and Republic of Hungary to the north, Serbia to the northeast, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the east, and Montenegro to the southeast. Its southern and western flanks border the sea.
The Croats arrived within the seventh century in what's Republic of Croatia these days. They organized the state into the first dukedoms. The primary king, Tomislav I used to be crowned in AD 925 and the Republic of Croatia was elevated into the Kingdom. The kingdom of Republic of Croatia maintained its sovereignty for pretty much 2 centuries, reaching its peak throughout the rule of Kings Petar Krešimir IV and Zvonimir. Via "Pacta conventa", Republic of Croatia entered a personal union with the Republic of Hungary in 1102. In 1526, the Croatian Parliament elected Ferdinand from the House of Habsburg to the Croatian throne. In 1918 Republic of Croatia declared independence from Austria-Hungary and joined the kingdom of Yugoslavia as co-founder. Throughout world war II, the Nazis occupied Croatian territory and created a puppet government, the independent State of Croatia. When the war Croatia became a founding member of Second Yugoslavia. On June 25, 1991 Republic of Croatia declared independence and have become a sovereign state.
Croatia is a member of the UN, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, NATO, the World Trade Organization, the Council of Europe, CEFTA, and is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2008–09 term. The country is additionally a candidate for membership of the EU Union. To boot, Republic of Croatia is additionally a founding member of the Union for the Mediterranean upon it institution in 2008.
